Who Can Vote

In order to vote in the Local Government Elections, a person must, on the day of voting, qualify either as a Resident Elector or Non-Resident Property Elector. You must not be disqualified by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in the election and must be registered as a Port Clements elector.

A Resident Elector must:

  • be 18 years of age or older on voting day,
  • be a Canadian citizen,
  • have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before voting day, and
  • have been a resident of Port Clements for at least 30 days immediately before voting day.

A Non-Resident Property Elector must:

  • not be entitled to register as a Resident Elector,

  • be a Canadian citizen,
  • have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before voting day and
  • have been the owner of real property in Port Clements for at least 30 days immediately before voting day.

If there is more than one person who is the registered owner of real property, only one of those individuals may register as a Non-Resident Property Elector in relation to that property.

Landed immigrants who are not yet Canadian citizens are not permitted to vote.

How to Vote

There are two steps to voting in a Local Government Election. First you must make sure that you are registered, and second, go to your voting place on voting day.

You must register to vote. The Village of Port Clements maintains a Voters List to determine who is eligible to vote in Port Clements. If you voted in the last municipal election, your name will appear on the  Voters List.

If your name is not on the Voters List, you may register to have your name added to the Port Clements Voters List. You may register:

  • in person at the Village Office, located at 36 Cedar Avenue West during regular business hours; or
  • in person, at your voting place, on voting day.

*   To register at the time of voting you must produce two (2) pieces of identification to verify your identity and residency (at least one piece of identification must contain your signature). Examples of acceptable identification are:

*  BC Drivers License/ BC Identification Card

*  BC Care Card

*  Canadian Citizenship Card/ Passport

*  Utility Bill (phone, hydro, cable etc.)

  • as a Non-Resident Property Elector.

*   Please contact the Office at (250) 557-4295 for more information on how to register as a Non-Resident Property Elector.

Port Clements Registered Voters List Information and Privacy

The Port Clements List of Electors is made available for public viewing and is provided to each candidate and Elector Organization participating in the election. The list contains the names of all registered voters, as well as other personal information such as the voter's residential address.

To protect your privacy you may request that your address be omitted or obscured from the list of electors. If requested to do this, the Chief Election Officer must comply with your request and the list will be amended. Please note that this request must be submitted at every election or by-election.

Go to Your Voting Place to Vote

You can vote any time between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the day of the election at the Multi-Purpose Building located at 36 Cedar Avenue West.

At the voting place your name and address will be checked against the List of Electors. If not previously registered, you will be asked to do so. Before receiving a ballot to vote, all persons must sign a declaration that they are "eligible to vote and have not voted before in this election".

Where to Vote

Voting will take place at the Multi-Purpose Building located at 36 Cedar Avenue West

If You Need Help Voting

If you need help to vote, you may ask the Presiding Election Official (PEO) in charge at the voting place to assist you. You may also bring someone with you to the voting place to help you vote. This person must make a solemn declaration to preserve the secrecy of your ballot, to mark the ballot according to your wishes and to not attempt to influence how you vote.

If you are unable to enter the voting place, you may ask to receive and mark your ballot at a place located outside the voting place. It will be necessary for you to bring someone with you who can advise the election officials that you need help outside the voting place.

Advance Voting

All qualified electors are permitted to vote in advance of voting day.
